Pelczar Award for Excellence in Graduate Study. This is an award from the University of Maryland Graduate School across all majors - great job Jim!

Read more about Jim on the team page. A big congratulations to Lisa Tostanoski, NSF Graduate Fellow in the lab, who has won the 2017 Lemelson-MIT prize! The Lemelson-MIT Student Prize honors the nation's top collegiate student inventors in economy, healthcare, transportation, food and agriculture, and consumer devices.
Lisa received the Cure it! Prize for her projects using biomaterials to promote immune tolerance and combat autoimmune disease. She is the first student from UMD to ever win the Lemelson Prize and will head to Boston this June for the award ceremony during EurekaFest. The science concentrate highlighted the use of self-assembled immune signals to promote immunological tolerance and control inflammation in cells from mice or human multiple sclerosis patients, and to stop autoimmunity in mouse models of multiple sclerosis.

This week's issue of Science Translational Medicine (STM) includes a new editorial by Prof. Jewell highlighting research to understand the process - fibrosis - that causes many implantable biomedical devices to fail. Dr. Jewell is an Associate Scientific Advisor at STM.
