Congratulations to Jim Andorko, AAPS Graduate Fellow, for a new paper from the lab accepted for publication in Bioengineering & Translational Medicine. The article reviews immunomodulatory materials in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Jim Andorko recieves 2017 Michael J. Pelczar Award for Excellence in Graduate Study

Jim Andorko, AAPS Graduate Fellow in the lab, has received the 2017 Michael J. Pelczar Award for Excellence in Graduate Study. This is an award from the University of Maryland Graduate School across all majors - great job Jim!

The Michael J. Pelczar Graduate Award was established from contributions made by friends and alumni and the award is intended to honor excellence in graduate studies.

Lisa wins $15,000 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize

A big congratulations to Lisa Tostanoski, NSF Graduate Fellow in the lab, who has won the 2017 Lemelson-MIT prize! The Lemelson-MIT Student Prize honors the nation's top collegiate student inventors in economy, healthcare, transportation, food and agriculture, and consumer devices.

​Lisa received the Cure it! Prize for her projects using biomaterials to promote immune tolerance and combat autoimmune disease. She is the first student from UMD to ever win the Lemelson Prize and will head to Boston this June for the award ceremony during EurekaFest.

Jewell Lab research highlighted in April 10th issue of Chemical & Engineering News

Recent results from the Jewell Lab were featured in the April 10th print and online editions of Chemical & Engineering News. The science concentrate highlighted the use of self-assembled immune signals to promote immunological tolerance and control inflammation in cells from mice or human multiple sclerosis patients, and to stop autoimmunity in mouse models of multiple sclerosis.

Emily's paper accepted for publication in The AAPS Journal

A new paper from the lab has been accepted for publication in The AAPS Journal, official journal of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). Congratulations to lead author Emily Gosselin, and co-author Lisa Tostanoski!

Emily Gosselin awarded University Graduate Summer Research Fellowship

Congratulations to Emily Gosselin, who has been awarded a $5000 Graduate Summer Research Fellowship from the University of Maryland. Emily's summer proposal is focused on developing materials to combat early stages of multiple sclerosis. Congrats Emily!

Prof. Jewell authors new editorial for Science Translational Medicine

This week's issue of Science Translational Medicine (STM) includes a new editorial by Prof. Jewell highlighting research to understand the process - fibrosis - that causes many implantable biomedical devices to fail. Dr. Jewell is an Associate Scientific Advisor at STM.

Dr. Jewell presents lab's new work at American Society of Transplantation's Journal club

Dr. Jewell was the speaker for the American Society of Transplantation (AST) and the American Journal of Transplantation (AJT) journal club this month. The interactive webinar was hosted by the AST and the AJT, and moderated by Dr. Jonathan Bromberg. Thanks to the society for the invitation and to all the attendees for the attention and great questions!
