The lab organized and hosted a booth at Maryland Day on Saturday that attracted hundreds of attendees. The activities connected fun experiments, biomaterials, immunology, ice cream, and other favorite topics.
Thanks to Eugene, Haleigh, and others for organizing, and all the participants from the lab for organizing and devoting time to making the event a success! Congratulations to Dr. Krystina Hess - lab alumna (2018), for having her paper accepted for publication in NanoToday!
Stay tuned for the full paper and read more about Krystina on the alumni page. Congratulations to Eugene Froimchuk, Clark Doctoral Fellow in the lab, who has been awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship! This three-year award provides more than $100,000 to support Eugene's doctoral research at the interface of bioengineering, immunology, and engineered materials.
Congrats Eugene - keep it up! Read more about Eugene on the team page. Congratulations to Eugene Froimchuk, graduate student in the lab, who has been awarded a Summer Research Fellowship from the University of Maryland.

Professor Christopher Jewell, jointed-appointed at the University of Maryland and the VA Maryland Health Care System, has been promoted to federal Research Biologist with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. This appointment continues the strong interactions Dr. Jewell and his lab have leading projects at the Baltimore VA Medical Center and the University of Maryland to combat multiple sclerosis.
Thanks to the nominators, letter writers, and promotion committee for their efforts! Read more about Research at the VA, or learn more about Prof. Jewell on the team page. Congratulations to Maeesha Noshin, ASPIRE Fellow in the lab, who has been awarded an internship to work at AstraZeneca www.astrazeneca.com this summer. Keep up the good work!
Read more about Maeesha on the team page. Prof. Jewell was recently featured in the American Society of Mechanical Engineer's magazine and Techcast. The stories highlighted Jewell Lab research and the opportunity for engineers to apply their unique skills sets to tough problems in biology and immunology.

Congratulations to numerous members of the Jewell Lab for excellent presentations at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society held in Orlando, Florida! The presentations covered a range of projects in the lab, all leveraging engineered materials to study and control immune function in diseases ranging from cancer to autoimmunity.
The presenters were: Michelle Bookstaver, NIH F31 Graduate Fellow Haleigh Eppler, NIH T32 Graduate Fellow Eugene Froimchuk, NSF Graduate Fellow Joshua Gammon, PhRMA Foundation Graduate Fellow Emily Gosselin, NIH F31 Graduate Fellow Shannon Tsai, NIH NCI Graduate Fellow Dr. Robert "Smitty" Oakes Great job everyone!! Read more about the presenters on the the team page. Prof. Jewell delivered a Keynote lecture at the national meeting for the American Chemical Society for the Biochemical Technology (BIOT) Division. Thanks to the organizers for the opportunity to share our work!
