Congratulations to NSF Graduate Fellow Lisa Tostanoski, who was selected to give a conference-wide talk during the 7th International Conference on Autoimmunity in Chania, Crete, Greece. Lisa discussed her work to understand how reprogramming the local lymph node microenvironment impacts the development and reversal of autoimmune disease in mouse models of multiple sclerosis.

Prof. Jewell presented a talk during the New Protein Therapeutics session at the Drug Delivery Fusion meeting this week in Tucson, Arizona. The conference was organized by Niren Murthy and Cameron Lee, bringing together scientists and engineers approaching drug delivery from multidisciplinary angles.

Dr. Zeng comes to us with a fantastic background in biomaterials, cancer vaccination, and mouse models of melanoma. Qin will be joining team cancer to focus on our projects aimed at more effective and selective immunotherapies through the integration of nanotechnology, biomaterials, and immunology. Welcome Qin!

Congratulations to ungraduate researchers Kevin Pineault and Jessica Yau for each being awarded ASPIRE Fellowships for undergraduate research. The ASPIRE awards - funded through the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute - seek to broaden the educational experience of undergraduate engineering students through direct involvement in real-world engineering projects. Kevin and Jessica were selected for the fellowships based on their current vaccine work in the lab and a research proposal they prepared. Kevin is a senior undergraduate working with graduate student mentor Jim Andorko, and Jessica is a sophomore working with postdoctoral fellow mentor Yu-Chieh Chiu. Congratulations again to Kevin and Jessica!

This week Prof. Jewell received the Fischell Department of Bioengineering's 2015 Teaching Excellence Award. This award is intended to recognize exemplary teaching inside the classroom, in mentorship, and in community outreach. Thanks to the fantastic faculty, staff, and students in the Bioengineering Department for this recognition.

Teams across the county will run, walk, and bike to build awareness and raise donations for pediatric cancer research. Our research lab has started our own team, Engineers for Alex!, with a goal of $2500 and 680 miles. We’ll log our miles each day during the month of September and we’re hoping you can help us on our way! We’ve created a team page where you can track our progress and donate. Every dollar helps!
