A big congratulations to Krystina Hess for being selected for the Department of Defense SMART fellowship! This is a prestigious national fellowship that offers Krystina five years of full doctoral support and a guaranteed research position with the Department of Defense following completion of her doctoral studies. The selection involved an application and research proposal, a phone screening for semi-finalists, and a final site interview at the DoD.
Congratulations to Krystina!! Read more about Krystina on the team page Krystina Hess is the recipient of a University of Maryland Graduate School Summer Research Fellowship. The goal of the Fellowship is to allow doctoral students to make significant strides toward the doctoral degree over the summer. The fellowship comes with a $5000 stipend. Congratulations Krystina!

Congratulations to Yu-Chieh, Josh, Lisa, Peipei, and Jim for great podium presentations of their work at the national meeting of the Society for Biomaterials this week in Charlotte. Prof. Jewell and Prof. Lance Kam (Columbia University) also co-chaired a well-attended session on harnessing biomaterials to tailor adaptive immune response. Thanks to all the speakers for outstanding presentations, and special thanks to invited speaker Tarek Fahmy (Yale University) for kicking off the session with a great talk!
When the group wasn't attending talks or networking, there were some key opportunities to enjoy Charlotte. For example, Josh unwound after his talk by trying out alternative career options at the NASCAR Hall of fame (left). Jim, Lisa, and Chris made sure to sample some of Charlotte's best BBQ with a pit stop at Sauceman's... Congratulations to undergraduate researcher Kevin Pineault for receiving the Godo Biomedical Research Scholarship. The Olatunji Godo Biomedical Research Scholarship provides an annual award to an undergraduate engineering student conducting biomedical research in the departments of Bioengineering, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering.

Congratulations to undergraduate researchers Arjun Adapa and Boyan Xia on their selection as Howard Hugh Medical Institute (HHMI) Fellows. This prestigious undergraduate fellowship provides a stipend and research funds to conduct research over one or two years.
Arjun is a Junior in the lab working with graduate student Joshua Gammon on using biomaterial particles to promote immune tolerance. Boyan is a sophomore in the lab working with graduate student Lisa Tostanoski to design new types of surface coatings for controlling immune function. Congratulations to Arjun and Boyan and thanks to HHMI! Read more about them on our team page and or click the link to leare more about HHMI at UMCP. Congratulations to Jim Andorko who yesterday successfully defended his PhD proposal. This is an important milestone in Jim's doctoral work during which he presented his research progress and his plans for the remainder of his PhD. Jim has been studying how the properties of biomaterials impact the structure and function of immune tissues such as lymph nodes. He recently received the Keystone Future of Science Foundation award, and is a doctoral trainee on an NIH T32 award. Congratulations Jim!
